After the Baccalauréat in Cameroon: All Career Options in 2026 (Universities, Training, Jobs)
Every year, over 100,000 young Cameroonians pass the Baccalauréat. And every year, the same question comes up: what now? For some, the answer is obvious — university. But for many others, the path is less clear. Tuition fees, distance, oversaturated programs, or simply the need to earn money quickly make the decision complex.
This guide presents all the options available in Cameroon in 2026, without judgment. University isn't the only path to success. And starting work early isn't failure — it's sometimes the best strategy.
1. Public Universities: Affordable but Demanding
Cameroon has 8 state universities spread across the country:
- University of Yaoundé I (UY1) — Sciences, arts, humanities. Ngoa-Ekelle campus. Registration fees: around 50,000 FCFA per year. The country's largest university with over 60,000 students.
- University of Yaoundé II (Soa) — Law, economics, political science. Main campus in Soa, 15 km from Yaoundé city center.
- University of Douala (UDs) — Sciences, engineering, arts, economics. Multiple campuses throughout the city. Similar fees to UY1.
- University of Buea (UB) — Anglophone system. Sciences, arts, education, engineering. Fees around 50,000 FCFA.
- Universities of Dschang, Ngaoundéré, Maroua, Bamenda — Each with its specialties (agronomy at Dschang, food science at Ngaoundéré, etc.).
The reality: public university is affordable, but conditions are often tough. Overcrowded lecture halls (500+ students), lack of equipment, housing difficulties in Ngoa-Ekelle or Soa. And most importantly, a degree doesn't guarantee a job — youth graduate unemployment exceeds 30% in Cameroon.
That said, some fields remain very promising: computer science, civil engineering, medicine, pharmacy, and engineering sciences. Choose your field based on the market, not just your Bac results.
2. Grandes Écoles: The Path of Excellence
Grandes écoles are more selective but offer better employment rates:
- ENSPY (National Advanced School of Engineering Yaoundé) — Engineering. Highly selective entrance exam (less than 5% admission rate). 5 years of study. Graduates typically find employment within 6 months, with starting salaries of 200,000 to 400,000 FCFA per month.
- ESSEC (Advanced School of Economics and Commerce) — Business and commerce. Douala campus. 5-year program. Excellent placement in banks, insurance, and private companies.
- ENSPT (National Advanced School of Posts and Telecommunications) — Telecom and IT. In Yaoundé. A rapidly growing sector in Cameroon.
- ENAM (National School of Administration and Magistracy) — Public administration and judiciary. Post-bachelor's entrance exam. Leads directly to civil service.
- IRIC (International Relations Institute of Cameroon) — Diplomacy and international relations. In Yaoundé.
Tip: If you're targeting a grande école, prepare for the entrance exam seriously. Private prep courses exist in Yaoundé (Biyem-Assi, Ngoa-Ekelle neighborhoods) and Douala (Akwa, Bonamoussadi). Budget: 50,000 to 150,000 FCFA for 2-3 months of preparation.
3. Vocational Training: Short, Practical, Employable
If you don't want to spend 3-5 years at university, vocational training is a serious and too-often underestimated alternative:
- CFPE (Centers of Excellence for Professional Training) — 6 to 24-month programs in technical trades: electrical work, plumbing, HVAC, auto mechanics, welding. Graduates are in high demand.
- CENAJES (National Center for Youth and Sports) — Short courses (3-6 months) in various trades: basic computing, tailoring, hairdressing, pastry-making. Present in several cities.
- SAR/SM (Rural Artisan Sections / Home Economics Sections) — Practical 2-3 year programs after the BEPC or Bac. Carpentry, masonry, mechanics, tailoring. State-recognized diploma.
- Private institutes — Institutions like IAI (African Institute of IT), ISTDI, or SUP'PTIC offer BTS and professional bachelor's degrees in 2-3 years. Fees: 300,000 to 800,000 FCFA per year.
Key advantage: a qualified plumber or electrician in Douala can earn 10,000 to 25,000 FCFA per day. That's often more than a young university graduate's starting salary. Skilled manual trades are a path to real financial independence. You can start offering your repair or helper services on SangoServices during your training.
4. Apprenticeships: Learning While Working
Apprenticeship remains a major pathway in Cameroon, even if it's less formalized than in Europe:
- Traditional apprenticeship — You join a master craftsperson (mechanic, tailor, hairdresser, carpenter) who trains you over 2-4 years. No tuition fees, sometimes a small "entry fee" of 20,000 to 50,000 FCFA. You learn on the job and start earning a little after a few months.
- Dual apprenticeship (GIZ model) — Some programs combine center-based training with on-the-job practice. The ProEduc project and the ADAE-GIZ initiative offer this model in several cities.
Apprenticeship is particularly suited if you want to master a technical trade and learn better through practice than theory. Many of Douala and Yaoundé's top artisans started as apprentices.
5. Entrepreneurship: Create Your Own Job
With a Bac in hand, you have the level needed to launch a small business. Here are realistic ideas with modest startup capital:
- Home services — Cleaning, security, gardening, babysitting. Capital needed: almost none. You just need clients. SangoServices connects you directly with employers in your neighborhood.
- Retail trade — Call-box, phone credit sales, small grocery shop. Startup capital: 50,000 to 200,000 FCFA.
- Digital services — Creating Facebook pages for businesses, managing WhatsApp Business, data entry. If you know how to use a smartphone, you can offer these services to local shopkeepers for 10,000 to 30,000 FCFA per month per client.
- Tutoring — With a Bac, you can give tutoring lessons to middle school students. Going rate: 2,000 to 5,000 FCFA per hour depending on the subject and neighborhood.
6. Work Immediately: Start Earning Now
Sometimes, the priority is to earn money — to fund future studies, help your family, or simply become independent. That's not failure, it's a strategy.
Sign up on SangoServices and start accepting gigs today. Employers near you are looking for someone for:
- General help — 5,000 to 10,000 FCFA per gig
- Security — 8,000 to 15,000 FCFA per day
- Tutoring — 2,000 to 5,000 FCFA per hour
- Small repairs — 5,000 to 20,000 FCFA per job
The advantage of SangoServices: you choose your hours. You can work in the morning and study in the afternoon, or work during the week and prepare for entrance exams on weekends. Total flexibility.
Important reminder: whatever path you choose, there's no wrong option. What matters is to keep moving. A Bac holder who works and learns is always ahead of one who waits.
