Job Application Letter in Cameroon: 3 Free Templates That Work (2026)

In Cameroon, the formal job application letter (« demande d'emploi ») is not just a cover letter: it is a codified administrative document that most companies, NGOs and public offices require at the top of an application file. A badly structured letter gets discarded before your CV is even read.

This guide gives the exact structure Cameroonian recruiters expect, three complete templates (handwritten, typed, email) you can copy and adapt, and the most common mistakes. If you don't have a CV to attach yet, build one free in 10 minutes with the SangoServices CV builder.

1. The Structure of a Cameroonian Application Letter

From top to bottom:

  • Top left: your full name, address (neighbourhood, city), phone number, email.
  • Top right: place and date (“Douala, 18 August 2026”).
  • Recipient: “To the General Manager of [Company]” — always the function, not the person's name.
  • Subject line: one precise line: “Subject: Application for the position of driver”. Add the job-ad reference if there is one.
  • Body: 3 paragraphs maximum (see templates below).
  • Closing formula: one classic sentence.
  • Signature: on the right, with your name.
  • Attachments: list them (“Attachments: CV, copy of national ID, certificates”).

Everything fits on one page. A two-page letter does not get read.

2. Template 1 — General Typed Application

NGONO Marie Claire
Makepe, Douala
Tel: 6XX XX XX XX — marie.ngono@email.com

Douala, 18 August 2026

To the General Manager
of CAMEX Sarl, Douala

Subject: Application for the position of sales agent

Dear Sir,

I respectfully submit my application for a position as sales agent within your company.

Holder of a Baccalauréat A4 with two years of sales experience in Douala, I am dynamic, rigorous and immediately available. I commit to serving your company with loyalty and professionalism.

Awaiting a favourable reply, please accept, Sir, the expression of my deep gratitude.

NGONO Marie Claire

Attachments: CV, copy of national ID, copies of certificates

3. Template 2 — Handwritten Application (Domestic and Manual Jobs)

For housekeeper, guard, driver or cook positions, many employers ask for a handwritten letter — it proves literacy and shows seriousness. Keep the same structure, write legibly in blue or black ink, no crossing-out:

MBARGA Paul
Nlongkak, Yaoundé
Tel: 6XX XX XX XX

Yaoundé, 18 August 2026

To the Director of Résidence Les Palmiers

Subject: Application for a position as guard

Dear Madam,

I respectfully apply for a guard position at your residence. Aged 32 with five years of security experience in Yaoundé, I am punctual, vigilant and of good character. My former employers can vouch for my reliability.

Awaiting your reply, please accept, Madam, my respectful greetings.

MBARGA Paul

Tip: on SangoServices, employers contact you directly — your profile with photo and pitch works as a permanent application letter, visible 24/7.

4. Template 3 — Application by Email

More and more Cameroonian companies recruit by email or WhatsApp. The message body replaces the letter:

Email subject: Application — Light vehicle driver (Ref. ad of 15/08)

Dear HR Manager,

Following your advertisement of 15 August, I am applying for the light vehicle driver position. Licensed since 2019 and knowing Douala and its surroundings perfectly, I transported company staff for three years without a single accident.

Please find attached my CV and a copy of my licence. I am available for an interview at your convenience on 6XX XX XX XX.

Respectfully,
ESSOMBA Jean — Douala

Email rules: a serious address (firstname.lastname@gmail.com), the CV as a PDF (never a blurry photo), and a single send — only follow up after 7 days.

5. The 6 Mistakes That Kill Your Application

  • Spelling mistakes — have someone proofread before sending.
  • Copying a template without adapting it — recruiters recognise word-for-word copies instantly.
  • A two-page letter — one page, always.
  • No subject line — without one, the letter is never filed, so never read.
  • A tone too casual or too servile — stay respectful and factual.
  • Unannounced attachments — list your CV and copies, and actually attach them.

Frequently asked questions

How do you write a job application letter in Cameroon?
A Cameroonian application letter fits on one page: your contact details top left, place and date on the right, the recipient (their function), a precise subject line, three paragraphs (request, qualifications, availability), a closing formula and your signature. List attachments (CV, ID, certificates) at the bottom.
Should the application letter be handwritten or typed?
Follow what the job ad requests. If unspecified: typed for companies and NGOs, handwritten for domestic and security jobs where the employer wants to verify your handwriting. In both cases, a single clean page.
What is the difference between an application letter and a cover letter?
The application letter is a short administrative document formally requesting a position — often unsolicited. The cover letter develops why you are the right candidate for a specific opening. Many Cameroonian employers ask for both.
